Milk Carton Boat Races
Jack Mulder, TCCA director of engineering rode in a floating baby loaf! Team Tillamook participated in the 2009 Dairy Farmers of Oregon Milk Carton Boat Races held June 7th at Westmoreland Park in Portland. The Milk Carton Boat Races are part of the annual Rose Festival Activities but they had not been held in several years. This year, through a partnership with Portland Parks and Recreation, Dairy Farmers of Oregon brought back the popular event.
“We were a last minute entry,” states Heidi Luquette, corporate communications manager. “I wasn’t sure I could pull together a team and build a boat in two weeks but Bryan Gibson and Jack Mulder stepped up and we got it done.”
The baby loaf boat was a huge hit with the crowd. Many onlookers stopped to have their photos taken with the boat and to comment on what a fun idea it was to have made a floating baby loaf. Tim Emerson, Oregon Dairy Products Commissioner and TCCA farmer-owner attended the races and had this to say to the build team, “Just want to thank you again for participating in the Milk Carton Boat Race. As a commissioner of the Oregon Dairy Products Commission I wanted you all to know that you helped make it a fantastic success. As a Tillamook producer you need to know that you made us all very proud.”
The team is already talking about next year.
