In Tillamook, running a dairy farm is a family affair. Just ask Steve and Lynda Neahring, who have been doing it in Tillamook for over 30 year.
Steve got his start in the business back in Minnesota, where he and his father farmed a variety of crops, as well as raised cows.
Eventually tiring of the cold Minnesota winters, they packed up and moved to Oregon, where they started their own dairy farms.
Now, Steve and Lynda run their family dairy farm with two of their children, Josh and Tim. Steve says that he’ll most likely transition the farm to one of his kids someday. “That would be our hope,” he says.
Steve recalls that when he first moved to Oregon from Minnesota, the full flavor of Tillamook Cheese was too much for him, especially when compared to the generic flavor of Midwest cheese. Now, however, he’s as passionate a fan as you can find.
“It’s the best cheese in the country,” he says proudly.
Even so, there’s one thing better than producing a best-tasting cheese. “The best part of farming is getting to work with my family,” he says.
